Does breathing affect your body weight?

breathing

You may find it hard to believe that breathing issues are one of the factors that affect body weight, albeit indirectly. According to Dr. Yue Weng Cheu, Clinical Director at DP Dental, when we feel tired, we tend to eat more, to gain energy. Tiredness can be caused snoring and sleep apnea as the natural process of energy production is limited by the reduced intake of air.

A study showed increased affinity to high energy food when we don’t sleep well. Short or prolonged sleep is associated with obesity, heart disease, hypertension and diabetes.

Keeping late nights affects the circadian rhythm, our body’s internal clock. It is running in the background to carry out essential functions and processes. Studies showed that circadian rhythm disturbances affect insulin level, affecting sugar level control.

Lack of sleep may result in:

– An inability to regulate the sugar that has been absorbed into the body.

– A tendency to eat more to replenish your energy.

– inflammation due to breakdown of ‘overcrowding fat cells
