Active Maintenance is used as a dental term to encourage patients to understand that regular attendance is required to maintain healthy teeth and gums. 6 months may seem frequent. However, it is 182 days in which plaque can settle into hard to reach places and start forming into tooth-decaying tartar which affects both your teeth and the gums.
If plaque and tartar exist and is left on your teeth and under your gums, it will dramatically increase over the coming months. Tartar provides an excellent breeding ground for bacteria, forming an environment where exponential growth is typical.
Tartar cannot be removed with the use of domestic toothbrushes or any liquids found in the supermarket. Plaque can be kept to a minimum with twice-daily brushing and flossing using correct technique and a healthy diet free from sugars which help plaque bacteria grow.
DURING THE CHECK-UP,
our doctors and Oral Hygiene Therapist (OHT) will remove plaque or tartar buildup on the patient’s teeth above and below the gums, behind impacted teeth (usually wisdom teeth that are not fully erupted), and along the fissure groves of the biting surfaces. Our doctors and OHT will also check the patient’s teeth and gums for signs of inflammation, recession and decay
WHY IS PREVENTIVE ACTIVE MAINTENANCE
Gum disease, if diagnosed early, can be treated and reversed. If timely treatment is not received, a more severe and advanced stage of gum disease may follow. Similarly, our doctors and hygienists also lookout for early signs of teeth or gum problems. Early detection of cavities, broken fillings and gum disease are easily treatable. If these problems go untreated, however, root canals, gum surgery and removal of teeth could become the only treatment options available.
Besides the health benefits of regular maintenance check-up, polishing using our advanced Air-Flow Prophyjet machine can also remove most tobacco, coffee and tea stains. The result? A whiter and brighter smile!
