What Causes Dizziness? How are TMJ Disorder and Dizziness Connected?

Have you been suffering from unexplained spells of dizziness? If you have been experiencing  constant headaches, ear pain or ringing, or unexplained dizziness, it might be linked to TMJ Disorder.

TMJ Disorder happens when there is a mismatch between the upper and lower teeth, joints and facial muscles responsible for jaw movement.

Some common causes resulting in the mismatch are:

  • Non ideal upper and lower jaw relationship
  • Crooked teeth
  • Loss of teeth resulting in bite changes
  • Muscles strained/fatigue as a results of clenching and grinding
  • Trauma to the jaw joints

What Causes Dizziness When You Have TMJ Disorder?

So how is dizziness related to TMJ Disorder?

Here’s what Dr Loh Ee Tyug, Senior Associate Dentist and Clinical Director, DP Dental Clinic Kovan, has to say, “TMJ joints are very close to the middle ear. Inflammation of the neurovascular complexes of TMJ joints can affect the middle ear which is involved in balancing.”

Some Other Symptoms of TMJ Disorder are:

  • Frequent buzzing or ringing sounds in ears (tinnitus)
  • Pain in your face or jaw joint area.
  • Pain when you chew, speak or open your mouth wide
  • Clicking or popping sounds on either side of the jaw
  • Locked jaw (have trouble chewing food)
  • Toothaches
  • Neck and shoulders pain
  • Frequent headaches and migraines
  • Frequent dizziness (vertigo)

What Causes Dizziness: How DP Dental Can Help

At DP Dental, we manage TMJ Disorder with a combination of orthotic and muscle strengthening therapy.

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS ) device is used to relax the jaw muscle before a customised orthotic is fabricated based on data captured by sophisticated computerised jaw tracking method.  Together with muscle strengthening therapy which aims to strengthen jaw oral muscles and promote proper oral habits, the orthotic treatment restores the jaw and muscles to physiologic position and relieves pain.

We also manage acute TMJ Disorder pain with LASER using low-level laser therapy (LLLT). LLLT involves the application of low-power laser light to allow for fast pain relief by reducing muscle inflammation. The LASER pain relief therapy is non-invasive and has no negative side-effects.
